The Big Finale: Spoilers From Spider-Man 3's Battle Royale

As Spider-Man 3 progresses through postproduction and more and more sequences approach completion, so it means that more and more staff on the production get to see more and more of the material.

For a very long time now I've known roughly how Spider-Man 3 concludes. Just now, though, I've been handed lots and lots more information. Though my source has yet to see the complete sequence, they've witnessed enough material - some shots, some animatics, some storyboards - to get a very clear idea of what's going on. Pretty much everything to follow is spoiler material, if that doesn't go without saying.

There's a tremendous action climax to the film, set in a construction site. Peter is trying to take the Sandman down; Eddie Brock as Venom is here to try and take Peter down; and Harry does his best to lend Peter a hand.

The Sandman seems to pull out of the fight after his young daughter intervenes. She's a secret character, with not much known about her (at least as far as the material in trailers is concerned) as is his wife, played by Theresa Russell. We have seen a glimpse of her, however, in one poster, clutching a teddy bear.

The Sandman's 'submission' gives Spider-Man his chance to best Venom, and in fact, Eddie Brock is killed... even though the symbiote isn't. Peter finds himself under attack from the host-less symbiote as it tries to posess him once more. The first time it possessed Peter was after he'd put Harry in the hospital, this time it look like it comes after him once Harry has died.

The big clue as to how Peter defeats the symbiote is actually in the trailers: ringing the bell in the church tower disturbed the symbiote's groove enough that Peter could tear it off; here, he clangs girders in the construction site together to gain the upper hand.

Now, I've been told that Mary Jane Watson is definitely heading off to meet her maker before the end of the movie, and you would think that this scene is where it is most likely to happen. Unfortunately, her death really must be getting kept under the strictest security as nothing my source has seen supports the claim at all.

Obviously, though, there are shots of Mary Jane in the trailers that place her very clearly at this location, during this conflict - so there's more to be revealed. I'm thinking she dies because Peter just isn't quick enough, and possibly gives the symbiote a good chance to posess him again. That all adds up to me.

Now, a few weeks ago, I recieved an e-mail telling me that the Sandman gets destroyed in this scene and explaining how, but as this came from an untested source, I was reluctant to run it. Just as a footnote, though, I'll tell you that, predictably enough, it involved a lot of water and an electricity cable. It's possible that Raimi is working on two parallel resolutions - one that kills Sandman, one which saves him - but I doubt it. I'm banking on the 'intervening daughter' storyline as it makes more sense with everything I know about the film's plot and characterisation overall. Besides, it's about time that one of Spider-Man's opponents ends the movie alive.

Spider-Man 3 (the best film of 2007?) is released worldwide on May 4th. You can subscribe to film ick's daily e-mail to keep abreast of any developments or just check the main page (and get lots of other good stuff into the bargain).

[EDIT: I have recently received even more spoilery information regarding Spider-Man 3 and am in the process of checking it out with the two people I know close to the production. It will go right up on the front page here as soon as I hear back from them...presuming, of course, that they can confirm it]

Am i the only one bummed about Venom dying? How lame is that? I thought that was the only character really worth developing more. Hopefull if there is a 4, the symbiote will continue on. I just with Eddie Brock wasnt killed off. Sam's taking alot of liberties with the Spider-Man story in this movie, I hope it all works out.

Don't worry, this spoiler is not real. I can't say anything else but that I am extremely close to the sources of the movie.Again, believe me, this spoiler is not real.

Why would you say that? I mean, I kno for a fact that the bits I state as fact are facts. (Lot of facts in that sentence).

"extremely close to the sources of the movie" - what? Some projectors?

this seems like a fairly good ending to me. They had to get ready of mary jane soon. And, i know eddie brock dying is sad, but if you think about it, he is a villain from the beginning of the movie (bugging pete at work, etc.); he just doesn't get his venom suit until about halfway through it; so in essence venom does have a whole movie.

I guess. It just doesnt seem right. If this movie is about Peter fighting the darkness within, why kill venom? He is the ultimate spidey villain, he is peters opposite in everyway, hes the constant reminder of what Peter might become if he doesnt stick with it. Hes such a big character, i just wish the movie stuck more to the comics.

even if eddie brock is killed off in this movie, they'll find a way to bring him back, just like Uncle Ben's killer is being changed to bring Sandman in. i bet the next movie (if there is one) will have Venom team up with that sweet supervillan Carnage for the true ultimate spider-showdown!

I may not be the one to talk but it feels asthough the challenge maybe to continue any story from one movie into the next, and that may be a flaw, true it grossed alot of money sure it would its an eye pleasure, but the true hearted fans that know that something just aint on point like it should be just lay back and let him take a crap on the whole spiderman generation, for an instance the timing in which these villians pop up its off key, I could have sworn that Hydro-man was involved by the time they wanted to tie the knot, and now they want to kill off the icon of villianary in spiderman, so I guess Carnage was a myth, and Peter being the clone of the Scarlette Spider is just marvel playing with us for so many years.Any ways hopefully they will make it a decent flick.

You're quite obviously lying - none of what you said would ever be accepted by the crew working on Spider-Man 3.

Lying?

Oh no. I'm certainly not lying.

You'll see.

wait a minute how does harry die and who kills him?

I think all the deaths are just Sam's way of saying "I'd rather just it over with and get to the Hobbit". I mean, who knows, they may come back with a fourth, just like how X-men is planning on doing after their spin-offs. But, if they get rid of Hairy, then that knocks out one storyline. By getting rid of Eddie, that knocks out(and possibly leads to) a Spidey\Dr. Strange Tie-in. By killing MJ, that sets it for a whooooloe nother story, that some of us want to see. I think they will continue. I mean, they first wanted 7 films, and i think that at th end, too many of us will be demanding a fourth. No matter what happens. So just bear with it, we have a few months to wai, so until then, just wait for Ghost Rider. And, I need to try to stop reading spoiliers. But their for the weak like me. Those who have to know now. Anyway, get over it. I'm sure there's a reason for all of it.

brock doesnt die he reamain alive without the symboite and is put in a cell with cletus kasady and that leaves the cliffhanger for spidey 4

I'm with you on that one becasue let's just face it killing venom would be like makng spider man ot spiderman venom is his arch nemesis they are the total opposite in ever way they need to keep venom alive and that means Brock need s to be kept alive mary jane is disposable you can get rid of her Sh'e not that important and she is a good motivator for spidey which means if she dies Perfect now he can get angry! I'de like to see the lizard honestly I've always loved that cartoon epidode how the lizards have that underground lair. It's just so cool! plus Carnage would be sweet to see also I can't wait. for the third movie Howvere I try not to believe Spoilers.

I thought when Petey was ripping off the symbiote, he was throwing the pieces down off of the church, which just happened to start landing on Brock, hence brock's transformation. I ain't buying it. Nice try though. I could see the sandman part, but not venom dying.

Brendon said...

Huh? You aint buying it? But it's true.

Yes, the church scene is as you describe it. At the end, though, Brock is snuffed out and the symbiote left hostless.

You'll see.
