The Way I'm Hearing These Dark Knight Rumours Is...
[EDIT: Lots of people have been coming to this post from IP addresses apparently in Chicago. An grossly inordinate number, in fact. Does anybody have any idea why?]
Katie Holmes is out of The Dark Knight, Rachel McAdams is in. Not as literally the same character, but in practically the same role. I know this came up before, but it came up again, to me, just now. Let's see if it comes up again, anywhere else.
Oh, for a Batman source as good as my Spider-Man ones.
In case you;re curious, I'd rank Batman Begins ahead of Batman Forever and Batman and Robin but behind Batman, Batman Returns (particularly Returns, actually - it's got some genuinely great stuff in it) and the 60's Batman movie.
Oh, and the TV show, I suppose. On average.

I can appreciate the two Burton movies as, well, Burton movies.
However, they aren't Batman. Considering the tiny amount of time that both Batman and Bruce Wayne have in both of them, he's mostly an incidental character. Perhaps a supporting role.
Batman Begins was all about the title character. The villains took a backseat to the hero's journey.
Rachael McAdams instead of Katie Holmes? Maybe the female lead will be able to speak out of the center of her mouth for a change.
Batman Begins is "THE" Batman film. The other Batman films, including Tim Burton's two films, just don't come near Begins. It's like night and day.
As far as Katie Holmes, hurrah! That was one of the disappointments in Begins. I'm glad that she is out. She is not a good actor, and has all the personality of a wet rag.

I watched the Burton Batman's recently and don't think they aged well at all. Batman Begins is easily the best. And Rachel McAdams is great so she will make a great addition to the cast.
I saw RETURNS drunk in the cinema in Portrush and enjoyed it tremendously at the time. Unlike when I saw BEGINS in a crappy multiplex where I was thoroughly bored. My best memory of that night is seeing the trailer for A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE.
RETURNS is a fine meditation on identity, BEGINS is a decent actioner that came across as being fairly redundant to anyone who has read a few classics from the Batman canon.
Besides, the Nolan movie shares the same flaw with the Burton/Schumaker flicks - how can you have a dynamic protagonist when he can't bloody move in a sculpted rubber suit. Adam West never had that problem. In all seriousness, the next Batsuit should take a few more cues from the West era. Look at Paul Pope's, Alex Ross' or Eduardo Risso's designs - it'd work.
When I was a kid, I loved the Burton/Shumacher Batman movies. Well, it was the first three. After seeing Batman Begins, I will probably never watch any of those again. I have been a Batman fan most of my life. Batman Begins is the best Batman/comic book movie to date. It is the only bat film to stay true to the character and mythology of Batman. Batman Begins was a character-driven drama with good action. It was much more than a simple "actioneer."
I liked the character of Rachel Dawes in Begins, and I even thought that Holmes did okay, but I agree that she definitely was the weak link in the cast. Rachel McAdams will be great, but since Holmes is not returning, I hope that McAdams will be a different character and that Dawes will not be present. They should just say she was killed or that she left Gotham.

Batman Begins IS the best Batman movie to date.
Have you actually watched Batman or Batman Returns recently? Some good moments in both, but they're deeply flawed, and as someone else pointed out, they haven't aged well. At all.
Zugernaut, I saw both Burton films in the last three or four m onths of last year. They're very well made, witty, sophisticated and far from obvious. Sure, they're flawed - but massively so? Only in spots.
I don't want to get deep into Nolan bashing, but Begins... well, it's quite a daft film really, and almost terminally boring. Try showing it somebody who isn't a dyed in the wool Batfan. Most of the time, they won't be moved to care at all.

Batman, Batman Returns, and maybe even Batman Forever were decent films in their own right, but none of the previous 4 films really captured the character at all. The Batmen in those films really didn't feel like the Batman out of the comics at all. Bale's Batman is the Batman/Bruce Wayne that we all know and love from the comics. Also, as someone else pointed out, Begins was a film about Batman--which none of the previous 4 had done. And not only is Begins the best Batman film, but it was one of the very best pictures of 2005...
you're getting lots of posts from chicago because thats primarily where BEGINS was shot, and DARK KNIGHT will be shooting there for 13 months, starting in april. go rachel! (mcadams, not dawes)
