Maggie Inking For Knight Time
Variety sez: Maggie Gyllenhaal's character in The Dark Knight is indeed Rachel Dawes, the self same character that was played by Katie Holmes in the last film.
Well, blow me down with a batfeather - I didn't think they'd need to preserve the identity of such a flatly written cypher. I thought they'd just rename the part, make it a new girl and be done with it. There must be some plot reason, surely? let the speculation begin!
Gyllenhaal's involvement was rumoured a while earlier, this anouncement of her signing is the first official word. Shame she didn't have anything better to do.

I think the Joker kills her. This gives Batman the struggle he needs. In the comic The Dark Knight Returns, Batman wanted revenge on the Joker for killing one of the Robins. Though, he could not bring himself to do it.
That's my theory.
Batman needs that level of conflict with the Joker. I also think that Batman doesn't need a steady girl. He's not Spiderman, he's a pimp... I mean playboy. Is there really a difference? Oh, money, right...
Batman ain't The Punisher, anonymous.
Batman is the protector of Gotham City: he stops criminals from murdering and stealing. That was covered in Batman Begins.
Batman is not based on revenge, if that were the case, then he would kill every criminal because he would see each one as Joe Chill.
Well, seeing how she works at the D.A's office, and this movie introduces Harvey Dent, setting him up to be the big bad for the third movie, it makes sense to keep her around. And casting a decent character actress in the role this time may prevent her from being the "flatly written cypher" she was first time.
Flatly written non-cypher time then.
I agreed - Gyllenhaal is great.
The DA thing probably makes sense, but having a new girl at the DA's office... or a new guy, maybe? - could have been a solution.
Ever read The Killing Joke? They're basing the Joker off of that and there's no Batgirl around...
They're basing this on The Killing Joke?
I'm prepared to bet they don't come anywhere near that level of quality.
