Netflix Gearing Up for HD-DVD and Blu-Ray
A new feature has appeared on Netflix today. Logged-in customers can see the option to "Set up your account for HD DVDs". Click there and the resulting page promises HD DVD will deliver "far sharper images, better sound and more features". It is expected that HD DVD players will be launched as soon as March 28th, and it should only be a matter of days after this that the first titles are Netflixed to homes across the US.
Netflix add "there is another type of high definition format called Blu-ray, which is not yet available. We will carry movies in this format as well, so check back later this year."
My advice to would-be early adopters is to skip HD-DVD and hold on for Blu-Ray. The Playstation 3 will be Blu-Ray compatible, and, regrettably, that alone will be worth a lot in the format war. Apple are going Blu-Ray too, and I'm an Apple man for good reason. The clincher, though, as I previously mentioned is that the porn industry, maker-or-breaker in all things video, have shown their support to Blu-Ray too.
HD DVD is as good as dead in the water.
