RIP UMD

Sony's Universal Media Disc is the way you'd get movies to play on your PSP - that is, if you have one. Thankfully, the PSP has been roundly thrashed by the Nintendo DS in global sales. Looks like quality won out in the videogame wars, for once.

Even those who do own a PSP don't appear too keen on using them to watch credit-card sized movies, however. According to several reports, not only are the major studios shying away from releasing future titles in the format, Wal-Mart are preparing to dump their stock and remove UMDs from their range - and, for what it's worth, other less dominant retailers are making drastic cut backs in UMD shelf-space also.

Go for it UMD speculators: e-bay awaits you.

Luckily for Sony their Blu-Ray format is inevitably the ultimate winner of the next-gen DVD wars, so they'll soon regain this lost ground.
