The Original Nicholas Angel
Nicholas Angel in Hot Fuzz may have the name of a music supervisor, but his character was inspired by a Bill Bailey sketch, directed by Edgar Wright. That's according to Edgar, anyway. The full sketch, co-starring Simon Pegg, is on YouTube now.

That was (in principle if not execution) much funnier (not 'wittier,' but funnier) than Hot Fuzz.
Seeing Nicholas Angel being hysterically over-the-top (and the MOVIE carrying his frenetic attitude, instead of mocking it overtly) would have been much funnier, and more afoil to (of?) Shaun of the Dead's attitude of them remaining casual through chaos.
You can go ban me now.
