The Big Survey - Please Take Part

I'm wanting to run a survey here, and I'd like as many of you as possible to take part. You might even want to send this link to your friends, so that I might gather their data also. Obviously, some of the questions are aimed at existing readers, but not all.

Either leave a comment or, better still, send an e-mail, but if you do leave a comment, please ensure you are a blogger user and you've used your ID in sending the comment: anonymous comments are to be discounted to prevent rigging when it comes to questions that could be represented statistically.

Here, then, are the questions - the first bunch are about the site, the second half about films and cinema in general. Please answer as many as you can, and always answer honestly. Thanks.

1) How did you discover film ick?

1b)... and when?

2) What do you want from a site like this one?

3) What do you like about film ick?

3b) What don't you like about film ick?

4) film ick often reports rumours that may not become fact - though we always try to make the originis of such stories clear and declare their rumour status. Would you rather we didn't report such stories, and just kept to officially announced press releases or links to other sites?

5) How many times have you visited film ick in the last three months? An estimate is fine, just be approximate.

6) How do you receive your film ick news? Do you visit directly? Always? Do you use RSS feeds? Have you signed up for the daily e-mail?

7) Most countries of the world have a film certification body - for example, there's the MPAA in the US, the BBFC in the UK. How do you feel about these and the job they do? What do you wish they would do differently?

8) How often do you go to the cinema?

9) Do you use Netflix or a similar subscription DVD rental package?

10) Which would you like to see win the format war - HD-DVD or Blu-Ray?

11) And which do you think will win?

12) What do you think of the IMAX format?

13) What do you think of the new Real-D 3D process (and similar)?

14) What do you think of digital projection?

15) What's your favourite film of all time?

16) Tell us anything else. At all.

Minesweeper; all the random factoids

3b) What don't you like about film ick?
Screenplay analysis

4) Would you rather we didn't report such stories, and just kept to officially announced press releases or links to other sites?
The rumors are great fun, but crowing about them afterwards when you get them right gets tedious

5) How many times have you visited film ick in the last three months? An estimate is fine, just be approximate.
Daily = 90 times

6) How do you receive your film ick news? Do you visit directly? Always? Do you use RSS feeds? Have you signed up for the daily e-mail?
Bloglines

7) How do you feel about these and the job they do? What do you wish they would do differently?
The MPAA is too concerned with sex and language; not enough variation in their ratings for adults (for example, the 15 and 18 certificates in England)

8) How often do you go to the cinema?
Maybe once a quarter

9) Do you use Netflix or a similar subscription DVD rental package?
Blockbuster online

1. I discovered your site through Rotten Tomatoes

2.Information on upcoming films, namely the Dark Knight and Neuromancer, and the Blade Runner DVD. Also I enjoy your film making sections and your script reviews.

3. I like the insider info, and the fact that this is a film maker making connection within the information and not a critic.

3b. I think you need a forum so your readers can discuss the topics.

4. No.

5. 500 times

6. Direct visit.

7. I don't like the way the MPAA encourages the "nanny state" mentality in America. At age 18 people are adults. Period. I like a system to allow parents to keep their children away from harmful content, that is all.

8. As often as there is a film I'm interested, this year has been slow and I've been disappointed at the cinema more than in previous years. Disappointments: 300, Grindhouse (to some extent), Spiderman 3. Pirates 3 was just as bad as the others, not a disappointment. Knocked Up was the first film I've seen this year that I liked with out exception.

9. Yes. Netflix.

10. The codec is better on HD-DVD, the space is bigger on Blu-Ray. I'd like a Blu-Ray burner on my computer. I don't really care which wins for films, to be honest.

11. I think they will be beaten out by downloads or the equivalent shortly.

12. I like it, not enough movies in the format though. Conversion can be silly. I saw Star Wars 2 in Imax and you could see everyone's make-up lines, but cut down to 2 hours, it was a better film.

13. Excited. I want to see more after seeing Nightmare Before Christmas.
Everything should be shot with 2 cameras in 3D style now, but it is not happening.

14. I have a deep respect for film and the qualities it posesses. I've heard that the color gold is better on film than digital. Still, when the resolution hits 8k, there will be little reason to show other types of film. I'm very worried about the degeneration of digital prints as compared with film.

15.Favorite film? Hmmm. That's a hard one. I'll give you 5 that I like a lot. I know I'm forgetting something...
a. A Clockwork Orange
b. The Battle of Algiers
c. Grave of the Fireflies
d. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
e. Kill Bill

1. Websearch, no idea when.
2. Stuff a little different from newspaper's 'inside info'.
3. Soemthing different in my mailbox and covers a nice range of things.
4. I'm not a Spiderman fan.
5. About once or twice a week.
6. Emails.
7. Nothing much to comment, brain not awake.
8. Once a year - usually with small child in tow.
9. Nope.
10. Blu-ray.
11. HD-DVD cos it is cheaper at the moment.
12. No views.
13. No views on this either. Ignorance is bliss?
14. Handy in a school: meaning the little digital projectors projecting onto walls.
15. Withnail and I: Reminds me of growing up.

1) Can't remember - Google search?
1b) About a month ago.
2) Fewer posts.
3) Tone.
3b) Too many posts - not enough time to read them all.
4) No, carry on.
5) Two or three times.
6) Bloglines, sometimes, no - just sometimes, yes, no.
7) Prefer they didn't make decisions for me. Perhaps provide more detail on content and effect. Not this "mild animal insulting midway through second act, by a woman" style of description they seem to have adopted lately though.
8) Couple of times a month before my daughter was born - 0 since.
9) Was on LoveFilm but stopped - didn't have time to watch the films I was getting.
10) Don't care.
11) Don't know. History says don't back Sony. So... maybe you should? I've mostly stopped fetishising technology. It feels good.
12) It's quite big..?
13) I don't know - is this this rubbish U2 are messing about with?
14) Does it make the onscreen colours funny like in "28 Days Later" and that one where they all jump in the sea and leave the baby on the yacht? Cheapskate cinema? I suppose it's okay. I'm bored of films looking like video games though.
15) God, I don't know - Blade Runner, 8 1/2, Brazil, Winter Light - depends on my mood.
16) I am writing this really quickly so I can leave work and catch my train home... oh, my least favourite films are Hardware, Beyond Bedlam and The Fast And The Furious.

Oh - I know what would improve readability: syndicate more than the first three lines of each post via RSS. It's very hard to read clicking backwards and forwards to the site from Google Reader or BlogLines.
