What's Gonna Come Of The Man Of Steel?

I've had a great tip off that traces back to a decent source with links within Warner Bros. It reveals quite a bit of exciting info about how The Man of Steel is going to go down when Brian Singer steps back behind the camera next year.

Apparently, Singer and Mike Dougherty have crafted a killer pitch and 'concept draft' that had the suits eating out of their hands and even had a knock-on effect for the plans for JLA (I'm told). Several key story points were made clear by the pre-production conceptual art, and here are some SPOILERY details of what those images revealed:

There's a new Kryptonian character coming to Earth as a result of Supes' pilrgimage to Krypton that took place before Returns.

Lex makes a deal with "a new villain" (I read this as new to the films, not new to the mythos, and indeed I have some idea who it is...) in order to have Superman eradicated. This villain double crosses Lex and takes over Lexcorp (yep - sounds like Brainiac to me too). What's more, Jason is a key part in the plot to trap Superman and...

Poor little Jason. He's snuffed out. That should have some of you cheering, you fiends.

So, there's a basic draft of the script (a scriptment?), pre-production art and several sequences storyboarded and, as far as I've been told, it's all going down very well with the execs. Nothing's gonna stand in the way of this film, I'm sure. And, reportedly, this one is really quite action packed with a threatening, smart double team of villains. Can't fail.

Treat this as rumour, sure. If you must. I'm buying it entirely because I know where it comes from.

[And if you don't find this exciting, maybe the big, big Buffyverse splash of the day will float your boat...]

Killing the kid makes the first film even more pointless.

Besides that it's a shame that this wasn't the plot of Superman Returns.

Anonymous said...

If that was the plot of Superman Returns, well we wouldnt have had Superman Returns, a fantastic film.

Anonymous said...

The fact of the matter is, superman returns was a fat overbloated movie. I love supes but THE SINGLE BIGGEST mistake that Singer made, was introducing that little brat, I will be the one in the cheering section of the theatre when the kid "gets it!"

Anonymous said...

I for one will be in the cheering section of the theatre! The single biggest mistake that singer made (one of many) was introducing that little brat. Snuffing him out is absolutely the best thing to do. He will do nothing but hinder the franchise!

I liked the fact that Lois Lane and Superman had a kid. I liked it a lot.

The biggest mistake in Returns - a film that I really loved - was Luthor's plan. It was uncinematic and unpspectacular and strangely at odds with the rest of the film.

Routh was wonderful. I can't wait to see Man of Steel.

Anonymous said...

Hope the part about the kid's untrue. The concept gave "Superman Returns" a little freshness. It would of been good to see Supes interact with his son. Now we have nothing but a Star Trek III clone. Can't they do something NEW? Hey, I'd settle for the kid being exposed to Gold Krytonic instead -hcc

In the novelization, it was never revealed, or even hinted at that Jason was Superman's son. The book was based on the original script and followed pretty close to the movie except when it go to that particular plot point, then it was radically different. The movie should have stuck to the script.

"The villain double-crosses Lex and takes over Lexcorp"

Since when has Lexcorp ever been in any of the films? Last time we saw Lex he was on an island. I don't understand what is going on.

I'll go see Superman: The Man of Steel, but I don't know if it will ever be made.

Anonymous said...

LexCorp? Since when is there a LexCorp in the movies?

Anonymous said...

Singer needs to do a few things in order to make this movie a proper Superman film.

1.-Get rid of the kid. Let's try to tie into the current comic mythos.

2-I'm going to get flamed for this but I thought casting of the leads was awful. Routh looked scrawny, and Bosworth needs acting lessons.

Spacey was the saving grace of the entire film. Best idea is to arrange for Luthor to become the Lex Luthor of Lexcorp and give him some depth.

Mark said...

Brainiac being Kryptonian tech was originally a Timm/Dini/Burnett concept, wasn't it? It seems to be catching on in all sorts of places these days (SMALLVILLE, this).

This death-of-Jason plot comes squarely from the utter failure of the character to gel with the fanbase, who gave that subplot from the film a resounding "wha.. huh?"
Let's face it, you do not make Superman seem at best a deadbeat dad, and at worst creepy, in his own movie franchise.

jjrakman said...

Superman Returns was more about Lois Lane's love triangle than it was about Superman. Routh had like 5 lines in the whole movie. I hope this one is better.

Brendon said...

Since when was there a Lexcorp? Since Man of Steel, that's when. The founding of Lexcorp is part of the plot.

Roger Brunke said...

You know...I don't think killing Jason would make Returns pointless. It would if Superman just brushed it off as nothing. But, if it creates an intense, emotional response in him, pushing him to the edge and perhaps even taking a life! It could be done REALLY well.

I like the idea of Lex creating LexCorp in this movie. It is like...the film is trying to catch up to the comics. Last movie he became rich, this movie he becomes a CEO. ^_^

"I've had a great tip off that traces back to a decent source with links within Warner Bros. "

a 'tip off'
that 'traces back'
to a 'decent source'
'with links' within WB???

That sounds like a hell of a stretch to consider a source and runs along the lines of this sort of logic
http://youtube.com/watch?v=lj3iNxZ8Dww

Anonymous said...

let's just go ahead and debunk this as utter bullshit. this post reeks of everything that is wrong with internet film sites. Let's go through this piece by piece.

You say:

"I've had a great tip off that traces back to a decent source with links within Warner Bros."

'tip off'
'traces back'
'decent source'
'with links'

Did this same person know this guy who talked to this kid who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night?

You say:

"There's a new Kryptonian character coming to Earth as a result of Supes' pilrgimage to Krypton that took place before Returns."

So they're going to create a villain for the new movie based on a concept from the first film that was never shown?

Alrighty.

You Say:

"This villain double crosses Lex and takes over Lexcorp"

You mentioned that Lex creating Lexcorp is going to be in the new film. Funny how that wasn't mentioned in the body of the piece but only after someone cried BULLSHIT. This sounds like someone who's a fan of the Dini run crafting a story that has no basis in reality, but hey, i'll read on.

You Say:

"Nothing's gonna stand in the way of this film, I'm sure. And, reportedly, this one is really quite action packed with a threatening, smart double team of villains. Can't fail."

Actually, several things stand in the way of this film, but your unabashed enthusiasm for team Singer seems to cloud any ounce of objectivity you might have on the subject. From your tone, i'd guess this information came right from someone in Singer's camp.

You mention how 'really quite action packed' it is, which seems to address fanboy concerns from the first one, but seems less like you have verifiable proof of this and instead are cobbling together bits and pieces from other reports.

If this turns out to be true, i'll eat crow, but i gotta tell you, this whole story reads like a poorly written high school piece without any foundation to stand on. I'm wondering if Team Singer is filming in Germany right now, when did this presentation occur to Warner Brothers.

Maybe your 'source' could provide more information.

Anonymous said...

So you conveniently fail to mention that in your story? Sounds more like you don't know what you're talking about.

And Routh was wonderful? Yeah if you like watching wood speak.

And how does Lois and Superman having a kid make one iota of sense?

Not to mention the biggest flaw of the entire charaterization across the board of characters, Richard White was the most likable and sympathetic character.

Since when do convicted felons (high profile convicted felons) suddenly found large multinational corporations? Even if he's freed on appeal...Since never.
There's no logic at all in this post, as related to the previous films.
Face it. The story's a fake. Next.

to me Singer tripped over his own reverence to the original films, ie.: having Luthor as a very ambitious but small-time crook.

Brandom looking like a seedy Superboy version os Chris Reeves didn't help but if any of this is close to the actual script[ment] then we may be up for an interesting take, at least.

killing the kid would bring a dark tone to the picture, wouldn't it? then using this to argue that Supes is so great that despite having his son done with he still cares for us. could end in a bright tone, but a bit heavy there in he middle...

I have NO faith in Bryan Singer's ability to make a watchable Superman movie. He had his chance, and his self indulgence ruined the relaunch of a movie that million of Superman fans have waited 20+ years for.

LexCorp has always been there it just wan't called LexCorp but that is what Lex calls it because it is the company he inherited from the old lady in Superman Returns and for all you criticts on thhis post, things do happen outside the film. I think i may be a slight reason in this film because i have sent hundreds of emails sending out my plot theory for this film to WB and anyone connect with this film who i can contact and the one above sounds a lot like mine with one tweak like Jason dies. Because mine was that Brainiac discovers the floating krypton in space and follows it source comes to earth in search of all knowledge finds kal-el and plans to destroy him using Lex before doublecrossing him abducting jason to get superman then having a final battle where Brainiac dies and at the end of the film in a pod thing is Bizarro growing created by Lex and Brainiac.

If I was the director of this movie I would better prefer to make the Superman Vs Doomsday showdown and kill superman at the end and then in the 3 part his son take his place becoming Superboy...What do you think???

I hate say this, but Superman Returns was a failure in so many ways. From a comic book stand point with all of todays technology
I should have been a child all over agian in that theater. And don't give me it wasn't the comic book crap and this that and a trhird can't be done. I love the excuse that a film isn't a comic book. This true, but tell what the hell is a story board but an artistic (comic)representation of the movie. As far as the new film coming out I truly hope, pray, and wish upon every star in the heavens that this film is better. Someone mentioned action I hope Mr. Singer learns direct some really heroic action sequences. I"ve not been imressed so far. His X-Men movies were bearable, passing even...but truly they were not the X_men...yet both his films were better than that horrorible X3

I really wish people would understand that Superman (as played out in SR) is NOT a deadbeat. A deadbeat denies his child/children. Doesn't acknowledge them, doesn't send any child support, just plain ignores them.

Superman did NOT do that. His speech to Jason at the end of the film ("the son becomes the father, etc.") proved he was willing to be a part of his life.

This is what needs to happen for part II:

Lex returns
Brainiac from Krypton comes to Earth, teams up with Luthor to trap Superman

Kid as bait

Supes wins in the end, Jason is saved, Lois goes back to Supes, Richard White goes crazy with jealousy in the end- how can he compete with Supes-- setup for part III:

In part III he becomes a Conduit-like character that enhances his body with Kryptonian tecnhnology to destroy Supes to win back Lois & Jason- but the K-Tech creates him into something monstrous and irreversable, like Conduit.

They also need to hint at Justice League because by now, you can't really have Superman as a fully-standalone mythos, since Superman's allies are actually part of the Superman mythos. Show a hint or something.

I trust my source. I didn't put what they sent me up here word for word, I paraphrased it. I'm not 100% on where and how Lexcorp comes from, they haven't explained but they do suggest it is new, that the beginnings of Lexcorp and the wrangling that enables this villain to take over are important parts of the plot. Whether Luthor founds Lexcorp before or during the film, I don't know; whether he simply names it, I don't know either. Whatever plot mechanic they have worked out for Luthor to be able to do this is still secret - as far as I am aware.

There's no more info in my source's material. They weren't in any pitch meeting, nor have hey got the materials to scour over. There's no more detail to be given at this time.

I tried to make it clear in the post what was info I was told - the main body - and what was supposition on my part (in brackets).

I hope you can simply take this for what it is: a good source reporting on what they know to be true about the pitch Singer and Dougherty made to Warners. It isn't somebody distilling a full script they've had time to digest, or reporting on the plot of an entire movie they've seen. They have scraps, they pass them on.

Kryptonians coming to Earth and teaming up with Lex sounds just like Superman II with Christopher Reeves.Singer needs to stop rehashing the theme's of the Superman movies he loved as a kid and come up with something original.
NO MORE LEX LUTHOR!!! The only way I'd want to see Lex in another movie is if they used the Lex from Smallville.(I like their Lex. He's more complicated, not totally evil.He has good intentions that go horribly wrong.)Plus I love the fact that he and Clark were once friends. That along gives a whole new dimension to their conflict as adults.

Superman Returns was and still is a GOOD MOVIE! Why you people fail to realise this is unknown to me. But yes, i agree with jason being killed off, which shows he never connected with the fans at all. Lex and Lexcorp? Wats that about? Unless they do a sorta time gap thing where lex is off the island and has set up lexcorp and it shows it in daily planet news clippings and flashback footage? Then the movie will start with the shit hitting the fan...

Wow, you guys are harsh (and probably 12 years old). I just had to say that SR was pretty amazing. Some incredible movie moments after Singer really upped his game (I mean, the X-Men movies are fun, but Returns had some great cinema). Routh and Spacey were dead-on. But I have to admit the Bosworth was weak (where was Gyllenhaal when she was needed for THIS superhero flick?) Anyway, this rumor sounds like a great possible plot - I had heard that Singer didn't release the Return to Krypton scene on DVD because he wanted to use it in a sequel, and this fits that idea. If Singer continues to improve on himself as a director, then this flick is going to blow me away. Very exciting.

Jason..... Should be made an orphan that Lois took in... the powers were derived through Kryptonite meteor shower that took place when he was concieved. Lois was investigating the incident and found a child in the destruction ( every1 else was killed) That might go down well with fans, because having superman jr. doesnt sit well.

That should be the opening scene of the next film.

Main villain....Titano who has been mutated when brainic intercepted titano's space ship lost in space & controlled by him to draw out superman.....

I can care less if the rumor is true or not about what they are doing with the kid or lexcorp or lex or brainiac. what i find hilarious are the "fans" that dog any part of this as so fake .. Hey since when does a felon get his own company?? HEY DORK since when does an alien come to earth and have superpowers.. the whole thing is fake, its a comic book STORY. as long as its entertaining then who cares what happens. stop trying to choose whats "fake" and "real" its ALL FAKE.

The kid is not Superman's and Lois is not the biological mother. It was all a fake out of the audience. Watch Superman Returns again. Lois said she just spent the night at the fortress not sleep with Superman. The kid doesn't push the piano and open the door and the kid doesn't have super powers. The kid really does have asthma. After the kid dies in the Man of Steel, then it comes out that he doesn't really have super powers.

I agree that Singer had his chance and blew it. The only reason Superman Returns made as much money as it did, was that people couldn't believe the negative word-of-mouth ... and had to see it for themselves.

Warner Bros. needs to jettison Singer and reboot the franchise like Superman Returns never existed.

Anonymous said...

If this is indeed the real plot for the sequel, it will prove that singer has finally accepted returns is a failure and he is now trying to backtrack on the mistakes he should never have made in the first place! I hate returns for what it did to my childhood hero, i hate the kid and most of all i hate singer for even daring to claim he is a superman fan. Do us a favor, fire him and start again. Only this time no five year absence, no kid, a corporate lex (not a soddin scam artist after land), a new Lois, a plot that makes sense and most of all, a new bright costume.

This idea sucks! Why not focus on the island that Superman launched into space continuing to grow and actually forming a New Krypton. Some of the crystals that fell out, fell on the giant island, and actually reincarnated Kryptonians that come to Earth with intent to take over the planet unless our greatest warrior is able to defeat the deadliest creation (it would have been Doomsday, but that idea is taken). Something like that would be better than killing a kid! Jeez!!

Anonymous said...

Why would they introduce the kid just to kill him off? Where does that get them? Sounds a little dark for a Superman movie, even a PG-13 one. And Lexcorp? Since when? Sounds like a load of bunk to me.

Hi,

Every time that I watch Superman Returns I really enjoy more this film. I think that Singer makes a good work.I don't have any doubt that Singer and his fellows writers can make Man of Steel a movie even better.
I like a lot of the idea of Super, Lois and Jason as a family. I hope that the boy stay alive. But I have trust that Singer will do what is better for the story. He desired pay a tribute for Donner and he made this really well in Superman Returns, now I think that he will make his own thing and has the talent to do this very well.

Having Jason die is neither a cop out or a reverse on Returns. It's a dramatic development.

Superman can't lose a son without having a son in the first place, can he?

I honestly don't believe this is true. The only thing more taboo than killing a kid in the movie is killing a dog, and this is supposed to be a mainstream popcorn movie.

I honestly think there's something wrong with people who like the idea of Jason. It's a bad message for the kids. I mean, it would be one thing if it was an amoral character like James Bond, but this is SUPERMAN!!! He should be encouraging young men to act right; he shouldn't be contributing to problems.

If there was some movie about a guy who just up and left his girlfriend and we found out at the end of the film that a guy who seems as decent as Richard does isn't her kid's real father, most audiences would think of him as a CAD. But since it says SUPERMAN RETURNS and Singer goes into interviews claiming to be a big fan of the earlier films and because Superman doesn't fight anybody and wears a blue costume, it's "wholesome." GIVE ME A BREAK!!!

Heck, even if they were married, it's still kind of a corny idea. But instead of that, they introduced Supertyke in the most immature manner of all!

And don't even get me started on how the idea of Jason contradicts the BS that Bryan Singer has been saying about, "this movie is a Christian allegory."

Even without the kid, it's a cut-rate soap opera plot mixed with a terribly generic Lex-scheme (memo to Singer: Lex trying to blow up the West Coast was only the icing on the cake) and could have been better. But the kid makes it something worse than the sum of all its parts.

Well.... didn't God get Mary pregnant, and not stick around in human form? Doesn't the bible send a bad message to the kids, too, then?

I think it's wrong that the kid has to die and all you people are stupid it's just a movie it not real life.

Agree with those who think this is bullshit. Love the idea of Brainiac--and certainly think that might happen. (They're gonna make use of the finished Krypton footage from Returns, in any case--Might as well retcon it into Superman being watched as he cruises through the devastation... and who better to be watching him than Brainiac?)

But the Lexcorp detail is a dead giveaway--There is no Lexcorp in the Donner/Singer-verse, where Luthor is the self-professed "greatest criminal mind of our times" and--perhaps more to the point--had *no* money at the start of Returns. He had to swindle it, and a yacht, out of a dying heiress.

And even more of a giveaway is killing the kid--That's fanwanking of the highest order. They're not about to kill a child in a Superman movie, let alone *Superman's* child. It's bad, manipulative storytelling in any circumstance --it's beneath Singer, Harris & Dougherty, and it flies in the face of how heavily they invested in this new wrinkle on the mythos during Returns.

Anonymous said...

The LexCorp intro needs some explaining...Why not bring back Gene Hackman as Lex's father - he is old and running LexCorp, wants Lex to take over (exploration of Lex & Father relationship - nod to Smallville and also to past films after Father told Lex to 'get out') - Lex kills off old man and now has a powerful corporation under his wing...finally, after years of being a petty criminal he is now in possession of real power (bridges gap of films and comics and smallville). Then introduce new villain and Lex deal. Meanwhile, snuff out kid and explore Lois & Clark relationship more - then bring on the kickass aspects of film - superman v new villain - and maybe actually have some fortress of solitude involved - superman's crystals recovered?.... This will keep heritage of films and comics together. I say good luck to Singer - but keep in grounded it the characters too...

Have you actually seen a superman movie, please when she is talking to richard white about spending the night with superman she is talking about the interview when superman firsts arrived to earth in superman the movie with chris reeves (RIP) AND margot kidder, it was perry white who titled the interview the night i spent with superman, as this is also the first time she has talked to superman properly and he takes her for a flight,
Yes they did sleep together in superman 2, when he gives up his powers and becomes human he leads her to his bed, watch supe 2, thats where singer got the idea of jason, was that has supes son based on the one and only time they DID sleep together in the fortress.....

Maybe it was just me...

But Returns sure seemed like the original Sup movie done a little bit badly.

- An airplane/helicopter mishap... with Sup telling everyone how safe it actually is to fly.

- Sup giving his apparent son the same speech that Jor-el gave to Sup when he left the old country.

- Lex being done in by a goofy fem fatale. Tesmacher anyone?

Also lame - Clarke and Sup just happen to return at the same time? It's enough that idiots who can't recognize someone in glasses. It's part of the original myth so what the heck. But do they really have to make it even more lame with unnecessary implausibilities.

Also lame - "alien technology a thousand years ahead of anything on Earth." Hell-o-o-o - Humans have been growing crystals for a long time. Granted not into big ol' honkin continents - which reminds me...

"What did my father used to tell me?"

"Get out."

"Before that.."

"They'll pay through the nose for land..."

Which movie(s) did that come from? That's right boys and girls - both.

If the next movie is another retread I will NOT be suckered into the third (if the fans don't kill it off at number 2).

Unlike the idiots in Metropolis - I can tell a bung hole from a casino. And I'll take a casino - but not the bung hole.

Get it straight oh you smartybrains behind the production. You blew it with Returns. Don't make that mistake again!

This smells of fanwank. I think I heard this "script" the day after Returns came out. Its too 'perfect' and reads like Superman:TAS more then a new plotline. Doesn't mean something like this won't happen but I doubt

They are not going to kill a kid. No studio executive would let that happen in a big budget production just to appease a small and impossible to please group of potential viewers, since it will cut dramatically into the much larger family viewership.

And all you people are being just awful to said kid. I can't say that Supes needs children, but Jason was handled amazingly well in the movie. Things could have arguably been better without him, but they could have been MUCH worse. Can someone say "plucky adventerous sidekick needs daddy to rescue him every five minutes" because I can and such a thought is terrifying.

Not without this characters but without this director's versions. Nolan and Singer created great versions to this characters. Why ignore this?

ok, first off the book is a hell of a lot better. I can see perry whites nephew (forgot the name sorry) getting ticked off and superman for being the father of jason and becomes an enemy with superpowers in possibly the 3rd film. I do not like the jason kid with super powers at all which the book didn't give the him any. I think singer needs to watch smallville and get up to speed somewhat. We had luthorcorp which reading death of superman lex takes over and changes it to lexcorp. Regarding brainiac I would love to see the guy who played brainiac in smallville play him again. I'd also like eradicator to come in, doomsday, or even an evil superman like the cyborg, or maybe a new kryptonian from the phantom zone. Personally I wouldn't mind seeing zod come up at the end of the movie. Lots of directions to go, make sure the direction is good and straight

Here's how i'd write it...

Before Superman Returns comes in to play. Lex marries the old woman and takes over the business that she or her dead husband created. He probably aquired other companies under an anonymos name. Companies like defense contractors, energy companies, software and techonolgy companies, and made his company public on the stock exchange, thus turning it in to a very very large corporation. After getting back to the main land, he devises a plan to announce the name of his new company and reveal its President, CEO, and 51% shareholder (Himself). News hits Wall Street and half of Metropolis along with the rest of the country react with horror but realize they can do very little because it has become one of the strongest companies on the Market and dumping the stock would only make matters worse for a vast majority of people in Metropolis and then cause the Dow Jones to suffer a tremendous loss in the market thus further hurting the U.S. economy.... Long enough?

In the mean time Lex Corp's space exploration agency has made contact with Braniac. Luthor and Brainiac eventually make a deal to destroy Superman at the same time both Luthor and Braianic plan on double crossing one another after Superman is killed. We the audience would know whats going on obviously, but get the climatic end as Superman prevails and seeks out to avenge his son's possible death.

Here's an idea. What if Luthor turned Jason in to Bizarro? Just an idea i'm throwing out there. Hell I should just write the script! I'd write one hell of a story...

MHW
