Sunshine Echoes On Aint It Cool

A review posted on Aint it Cool shares many of my concerns with Sunshine. Not the top review - which is fairly positive - but the bottom one. Of course, I'm not supposed to have any cynicism about Sunshine. I'm supposed to sit drooling with anticipation, aren't I?

Maybe if Boyle and Garland hadn't previously teamed up for two of the most foolish and ill-conceived films of the last decade I'd have a different head on.

Here are some quotes from the review:

I felt they had thrown away the intelligence I was hoping the film would carry.

Who the f*ck will call a spaceship charged with saving humanity Icarus? And as the first Icarus vanishes and the mission a failure – who would call the new ship Icarus 2? Don’t they know what happens if you fly to close to the sun?

After the Icarus 2 finds the Icarus 1 it all turns very silly. Despite some serious posturing from the characters and some serious pseudo science the whole thing ends up being as formulaic as an episode of Murder She Wrote. There is fascinating subplot about being closer to the Sun and seeing God. However none of this develops beyond the ranting’s of the “bad guy” in the final 10 minutes. And that’s the problem.

...the film ends up taking predictable story choices and ends up being a generic Mad Man on a spaceship. Kinda like Event Horizon without the Event.

Madness At Latino Review

Thanks to a link at Jo Blo, I have just finished reading a script review of Guillermo del Toro's At The Mountains of Madness on the Latino Review site. Like (almost?) every script review El Mayimbe ever posts there, this is very positive, though this one may in fact be amongst the very most positive of all.

I recall their droolingly eulogistic Halo script review almost as fondly as I do laughing at the terrible halo script itself (thankfully, Alex Garland left the project and was replaced by D B Weiss- so who knows what we'll actually end up with?). El Mayimbe certainly likes to hype things up a little.

Does anybody out there have the inside knowledge necessary to lift the lid on this character? Is he an agent hyping scripts by his clients? Or just a very excitable chap? And how exactly does he get his hands on all of these scripts?
