(The links are below. First of all, a little bit of...frustration about how this film is being handled.)

I blame the audiences. I swear, they're incapable of getting up off of their behinds, getting down to the cinema and seeing more than one film in a month or two, no matter how good the films on release might be. Compared to us - who probably see many, many more films than this - the average cinemagoer shows no interest, really, or makes any effort.

Next time you go to the cinema take notice of how many people have come with no idea of what it is they'll actually watch, even what is actually on or when. The majority of these then wind up settling for the most famous/least challenging alternative (at least as per the advertising) and help some complete horse's behind to box office gold.

As a result, release dates are concocted as though the distributors are trying to fathom some kind of odd alchemy between film and date, hiding from other releases or the wrong kind of public holiday. Perhaps the timing can make or kill a film - that's one excuse for the Grind House failure, anyway - but really, it shouldn't. And it wouldn't if the cinema wasn't treated as some kind of big, fat annexe to the idiot's lantern.

Anyway, as a result, we can end up waiting months for films that, under more sensible circumstances, we'd be seeing for the second time on DVD around the time they're actually let out of prison and into the multiplexes.

Here's the trailer for Neil Jordan's The Brave One, in 480p, 720p and 1080p. Let's idle the months away together, waiting for the day the studio think this film should be unleashed - as though, somehow, the weather outside or the numbers on the calendar can actually effect the quality of a film.

Oh, as a footnote: I promise you, the film will be better than this trailer suggests, at least on it's most superficial level. This is just a dumbing down piece, of course, trying to ensure this film is famous enough or doesn't look too challenging, all so that it might draw in the ambling mass wandering lost about the cinema foyer.

In A Heart Shaped Box

Poor Joe Hill, everybody wants to name his father when they discuss him. So I won't. I'm not really a fan of his dad's books... though they have been turned into some great films over the years. DePalma, Kubrick and Rob Reiner - twice - have all done sterling jobs in hadling Joe's dad's stuff, Romero and Darabont made pretty good second-tier efforts too.

Now the signs are looking great for the first adaptation of a book from junior, as Neil Jordan has signed a deal to direct and script. It's a ghost story about a rockstar who buys a haunted suiton e-bay. The title suggests a certain rock star, but I've not read the book, so I honestly don't know.

I have read about the ghost's tendency towards possession however: he takes control of a car radio, a ouija board and - brilliantly - the electric voicebox of a laryngectomy patient. Spooky.

There are plenty of excerpts on Hill's website, but I think I'll check out the local library's copy instead.

No news if Jordan will tackle this before A Killing on Carnival Row for sure, but I'd expect this to come later as the script appears to be further from being ready.

The Tanglewood

Here's some vague and wishy washy deductive reasoning for you.

Arnold and Anne Kopelson like the writing of Travis Beacham. They're in charge of his script A Killing on Carnival Row, and are now prepping it for production under director Neil Jordan. We know they like Beacham's writing because they've just shelled out for his new script, The Tanglewood. Again, it's a dark fantasy with quite a high-concept premise - so far secret.

Neil Jordan is being allowed his own rewrite on the Carnival Row project - which suggests, to me at least, that the Kopelsons like Jordan's writing more than Beacham's, or at least want to secure him as a director and will let him tailor the script as he sees fit. This has calmed me entirely regarding Jordan simply being a 'director for hire'.

Neil Jordan To Kill On Carnival Row

I remember when Travis Beacham's script for A Killing on Carnival Row was first sold, and how it sounded like the film might be a tricky one to get right. The plot revolves around a serial killer in a Victorian city where most of the inhabitants are in some way enchanted or tied in to magic, many of them elves, fairies or even vampires. Essentially a rather gothic detective mystery it dripped imagery, but imagery that some well-read fantay fans might find on the border of cliche.

Thankfully, though, New Line have now attached Neil Jordan to the project. Perfect choice - particularly as Jordan is getting to do his own rewrite. He'll bring this to life in a very vibrant, three-dimensional way, I have no doubt. He'll respect both the Victoriana and the occult and fantasy elements, keeping the feeling of everything fresh and idiosyncratic - and he can easily do some very chilling murder set-pieces.

We're on for some very memorable cinema here. I'll be keeping a very close eye on the progress of Killing on Carnival Row from here on out. Wonder who Steven Rea will end up playing?

Take this as a preview of my upcoming 2007 preview - I'm certainly betting that The Brave One is going to be great.
